Let’s be honest – leading can be hard. Especially if you lack foundational skills critical to being effective. Successful leaders today need to have a combination of empathy, courage, vision, and flexibility. These attributes allow them to inspire, motivate, and empower their teams, as well as to adapt to changing needs and expectations, face the unexpected, and achieve their goals.

Empathy: the ability to understand and share the feelings and perspectives of others. Leaders who are empathetic build trust and rapport with their team members and show them they are invested in their well-being, development, and success. Empathetic leaders communicate effectively with diverse audiences, tailoring their messages and actions to suit different situations and needs. Most importantly, empathetic leaders pay attention and care.

Courage: the willingness to take calculated risks and face challenges with confidence and resilience. Leaders who are courageous overcome their fears and doubts and pursue their goals with passion and determination. Courageous leaders encourage their team members to step out of their comfort zones, experiment with new ideas, and learn from their mistakes. Most importantly, they are willing to do the hard things.

Vision: the ability to create and communicate a clear and compelling picture of the future that aligns with the mission and values of the organization. Leaders who have vision inspire their team members to work towards a common purpose and provide them with direction and guidance. Visionary leaders anticipate and respond to opportunities and threats in the external environment, driving innovation and change. Most importantly, they stay true to their core goals.

Flexibility: the readiness to accept and consider new and different opinions, perspectives, and ideas. Leaders who are flexible foster a culture of learning and curiosity and leverage the diversity and creativity of their team members. Flexible leaders adapt to changing circumstances and embrace feedback and criticism as opportunities for improvement. Most importantly, they listen.

The hardest one for me is remaining flexible. While I am comfortable with change and try to foster a culture of learning, I do find it hard at times to embrace feedback, especially that critical kind...I'm still a work in progress!

What's the hardest for you? And is there an attribute you feel is missing?
